Commencing dancing at age four, Jana studied the RAD and CSTD syllabi, studying ballet, jazz, tap and theatrical styles. Her love for dance and movement then led her to also train in contemporary dance and hip hop. Jana worked casually in corporate dance promotions whilst completing a double degree of Occupational Therapy and Ergonomics, Safety and Health at Latrobe University. Jana then went on to complete a Certificate IV in Training and Education, Level 1 accredited mat Pilates, a Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management and the Acrobatic Arts Teacher Certification. Jana has also completed Perfect Form Physiotherapy’s Level One Physio for Dance Teacher training and Level Two Physio for Dance training relating to managing hip injuries and Flexibility for dancers. “Keeping our dancers safe and sustaining their dance longevity is a huge priority for me.”
Jana was recruited by Wakakirri, a national story-dance competition, to work as an Artist in Residence at local high schools and primary schools for their performances. In 2015, Jana won the ‘Best Solo Choreography’ award for her work with one of the students. Jana is a full Affiliated Member of Australian Teachers of Dance (ATOD).
In 2018, Jana’s passion and leadership was recognised at the Geelong Small Business Awards, winning the People’s Choice Health and Wellbeing award and becoming a finalist in both the Creative Industries and Health & Wellbeing panel judged Industry awards. Jana was also invited to co-choreograph GSODA Junior Players ‘Shrek the Musical’ as well as perform in and choreograph a piece for Attitude Dance Company’s ‘Disconnect.’ In 2019, Jana was asked again to work with GSODA, choreographing ‘Hercules the Panto.’
Whilst she loves performing, her major passion is in choreography and teaching dance. Jana has taught at various dance schools around Melbourne and Geelong for the past 19 years, and is excited to be leading her team in her sixth year as Director of DanceWorks Geelong.
